The ABC's of Finding Your Financial Feet
10 tips for students who are about to embrace financial freedom for the first time.
By Deirdre McMurdy (August 13, 2008)
When I was growing up, there was always one topic that was absolutely forbidden in any family conversation: money. It was considered the height of bad form to ever allude to it, let alone where it came from, how it was allocated and who controlled its management.
As a result, it was a considerable relief to learn that rather than being raised by parents who were more twisted than average, I experienced pretty much a normal childhood. At least on that score. According to a recent survey from the Bank of Montreal, money is a more sensitive topic for Canadians than religion, politics and weight: 46 per cent are squeamish about talking dollars and cents compared with 34 per cent for religion and 20 per cent for politics.
That prevailing attitude is also reflected in many other ways as well - not the least of which are news stories like the U.S. sub-prime mortgage crisis, the collapse of asset-backed commercial paper investments held by individuals who were apparently oblivious of the risk and the fact that as economic times get tougher, personal bankruptcies are soaring. In April, they were the highest they've been in the past four years at just over 8,000.
Given all of that, it's not terribly surprising that so many students quickly fall into financial problems when they leave home for the first time and head off to college or university. In many cases, there's a good chance that their parents haven't been terribly diligent about either saying no or demonstrating their own discipline when it comes to personal finances - something that's underscored by record levels of personal debt.
So what are some of the basics that novices should consider this fall as their parents deposit them on campuses across Canada for some education and a crash course in basic life skills?
1. Never lose sight of the fact that your adult credit history begins now. That means whatever inexperienced mistakes you make now may affect your credit rating and record for many years to come. This is serious stuff.
2. Shop around for both general information and for the best student deals on services. Most banks are eager to build relationships with the next generation of personal banking clients and offer special packages that reduce or waive many service charges. All of that's online at places like www.rbcroyalbank.com/student.
3. Despite the myriad offers you're bound to receive, treat credit cards with extreme caution. They put temptation directly in your way and if you do acquire one, be very sure you take a look at the monthly interest charge that applies to unpaid balances. Paying off the minimum required amount every month is going to get you into a big hole very quickly.
4. Draw up a budget that includes not just rent, food, books and tuition, but also factors in utility costs, insurance premiums for your laptop and other valuables. Whether you live in a residence or with other students, such things can disappear.
5. When you draw up your budget be sure to factor in entertainment. At least that way you'll have a basic guideline of how much you have to spend on lattes, beer and movies. Just remember that small things add up quite dramatically. For example, spending $20 a week on beer represents $1,200 a year. And $20 doesn't buy that much beer.
6. In addition to budgeting money, budget your time. As a student, time is your principal commodity. That means setting yourself the task of spending one hour a week on personal finances - reconciling your budget, checking out your cash flow, making adjustments as necessary.
7. The time you have at your disposal also means that you may want to consider getting a part-time job. If you decide to go this route, opt for a gig with tips. That way you have some direct upside leverage to your personal performance and you can get a nice bump to the basic wage.
8. Don't fall into the trap of eating out all the time. It's not only unhealthy it's expensive. The best bet is to plan your meals ahead of time to avoid waste and impulse purchases. Take it from someone who too often shops for groceries on the way home from work: don't step into a grocery store with an empty stomach.
9. Maybe your parents never said no or never bought you a used bike, but there's a first time for everything. Keep your eye peeled for second hand books and other gear. And never be shy about asking if there's a student discount available - or bargaining.
10. Always keep an eye out for scholarships, bursaries or grants for which you may qualify.
Save $6,000 By Paying Attention
By spending smart in just six areas, you'd do better for your bottom line than if you were to get a big raise from your employer.
By Scott Burns (August 14, 2008)
Yes, there is a silver lining in our weakened economy. It's small, but it has a value far greater than most people realize.
I call it the Power of Attentive Spending.
Today, many people are worried about losses in the stock market. They are fretful about low yields on their bonds and deposits. Some North Americans are anxious about the value of their homes. And they are grating their teeth about whether they will ever see a pay raise again.
Basically, we're surrounded by an infuriating collection of things we can't change, influence or control. That's more stomach-churning moments than most of us can handle.
But all of those miseries increase the value of something we can actually do: spend the money we have with care and attention. The August issue of Consumer Reports, for instance, says a typical household can cut its expenses by $500 a month. And it can do so by examining the cost of only six items.
Some households will save more, some less, but the magazine estimates that a typical household can save:
* $65 monthly by getting cheaper car insurance.
* $110 by optimizing its life insurance.
* $200 through smart food shopping.
* $35 in phone costs.
* $25 in bank fees.
* $65 by paying off credit card debt.
That's a lot of money.
It's also important to note that this isn't "belt-tightening." It isn't the kind of spending reductions that mean a drop in your standard of living. It's efficiency, not penny-pinching.
Better than a raise
With Canadian household income sitting at a median of $58,300 after taxes, that $6,000 a year in savings can make a big difference.
Why is the gain from attentive spending better than a big wage gain?
* Talk back: What's the best financial advise you've gotten?
By spending smart in just six areas, you'd do better for your bottom line than if you were to get a big raise from your employer.
Simple. That $6,000 in savings is after-tax income, not pre-tax income. Spend a few hours -- even a few days -- looking at alternatives, and a typical household can find economic benefits that are literally worth weeks of job-time work.
What you'd have to invest
The benefits are even more interesting if you ask what you'd need to have in investments to produce $6,000 in after-tax investment income. Do that and you learn that your attentive-spending "portfolio" is greater than the amount most people have accumulated in their retirement plans.
It compares favourably with the financial assets most households accumulate over an entire career. A recent study done by Ernst & Young for Americans for Secure Retirement, for instance, found that U.S. households with $50,000 in income had an average of $105,000 in financial assets as near retirees (age 55 to 59) and $175,000 in financial assets as new retirees (age 60 to 64). American households with $100,000 in income had $280,000 as near retirees and $585,000 as new retirees.
Since a household income of $103,000 puts a household close to the top 10% of all households in America, it's pretty safe to say that nine out of 10 households would benefit greatly by paying careful attention to how they spend their money.
Help! My Debt is Killing My Dream!
Deborah Marinuzzi has big plans for her apparel enterprise. But finances are so tight that she can't even spend the money to get it off the ground. Here's how she can reach her goals.
By Karin Price Mueller (August 13, 2008)
Deborah Marinuzzi needs to liberate her dream.
Today Deborah works as a freelancer, helping to sell other designers' clothing and products at design shows. But she dreams of owning her own design business.
She wants to create several clothing lines, using artists to embellish the apparel. She wants to design jewelry, handbags and other items, and import finished goods. But somehow she can't get started.
"There are so many different things to think about with a business,'' Deborah says. "I don't like to think in fear. I like to stay positive."
But to stay positive, she's going to have to face her personal debt.
Her situation
Years ago, Deborah got a credit card, thinking she would use it only to fund the business she so badly wanted to start. But shortly thereafter, she found herself out of work and used the card to buy food and pay the rent. She racked up $5,500 in charges, then missed or was late on several payments. As increased interest charges and late fees kicked in, the balance on the card ballooned to $9,000, and Deborah couldn't stay current with even the minimum payment.
Additionally, Deborah borrowed $10,000 from a generous friend, with plans to use the money to open a design studio. Those plans fell through, and Deborah spent the loan on living expenses. She's paid back some of the money, but she still owes the friend $6,500.
Finally, Deborah has a $2,000 balance at her dentist's office.
Fixing her finances
If she wants her business to get off the ground, Deborah must clean up her credit and begin paying back the money she owes in earnest.
To get started, she needs to have a full understanding of her credit reports, which will list her creditors and her payment history. She is entitled to one free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus -- Equifax, Experian and TransUnion -- once a year. To get her reports, Deborah should contact AnnualCreditReport.com, a joint service offered by the credit bureaus.
Once she grasps where her finances are, she needs to set up a strict payment plan to settle her debts.
Her priority should be her credit card, as the outstanding balance and late payments will have the biggest impact on her credit reports. Next should come the dental bill and, finally, the loan from her friend.
Of course, Deborah doesn't want to leave her friend high and dry, but the reality is that the status of her friend's loan won't affect Deborah's ability to borrow, unless her friend takes her to court.
Now that the dimensions of the problem are in focus, Deborah needs to create a strict budget.
And she should look for a part-time job. Obviously, a design job is ideal, but Deborah should consider anything, from a retail job to pumping gas, to help pay off her bills.
Get organized
Once she's paid down her debts, Deborah can turn to her business dream. To achieve it, she needs to get organized. She has a wealth of potentially marketable ideas but no action plan.
Here are five steps she should take:
Choose one idea to start. Deborah should narrow her focus to the most marketable of her design ideas for a product line.
Choose one store. Rather than try to sell her designs on a large scale to start, Deborah should try one store. She should keep trying until she finds a partner. Other stores will be more likely to give her designs a try if Deborah can show that they have sold in a similar store.
Broaden her market. Once she identifies the products she wants to sell and the type of store that can sell them, she needs to make a list of similar boutiques that might be interested. She should broaden the geographic area so she can hit similar stores in different markets. That will allow her to expand the potential customer base.
Create a business plan. If things go well, Deborah will need a business plan, a document that details the process a business will use to make money. A solid, thoroughly thought-out business plan is her best shot at selling her business to potential lenders and investors. A business plan typically includes:
- Promotional and marketing plans.
- Information about the products.
- A report on the competition.
- A rundown on the organization's structure and employees.
- Information about possible expansion in the future.
- Funding requirements and possible sources of money.
- Possible problems or complications, and fallback plans.
- Milestones and timelines for the business.
To enlist free help on devising a business plan, Deborah should contact SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives.
Investigate financing. With a business plan in hand, Deborah could investigate loans for the business. She could look into a loan backed by the government. By guaranteeing repayment of a portion of the loan, this will lower the risk taken by the lender and makes it easier for a new entrepreneur to get credit.
Of course, all of that lies down the road. Until Deborah cleans up her credit and gets organized to go after that dream, it's impossible to know what sort of support she might get. She needs to approach the process of positive change one step at a time. If she does, you may see Deborah's designs lining the racks at a boutique near you.
Carmen Electra's 10 Sexy Clothing Must-Haves
By Carmen Electra with Sheryl Berk (canadianliving.com)
1. A pair of black, closed-toe, two- to three-inch heels. They go with anything -- even jeans. And the heel height won't leave you crippled if you're on your feet all day. Look for leather, which will stretch and breathe the most and be the most comfortable, as opposed to other materials such as vinyl.
2. A pair of slimming, dark denim jeans. The cut and the waist don't matter. As long as the wash is a deep midnight blue and they fit you like a glove.
3. A V-neck cashmere sweater. A little loose, and a little plunging. What man wouldn't like to put his arms around a girl wearing this? Choose a colour that flatters your complexion -- vibrant red or ultraslimming navy or black are usually best.
4. A pair of diamond stud earrings (real or faux). Every girl feels like a princess in these, and they add instant glamour, even to a T-shirt and sweats.
5. A great bra that really fits. Go and get measured; try one on and look at yourself from all angles, and make sure it does what it's supposed to do: lift, separate, support, and minimize or maximize.
6. Sexy panties. Lacy, leopard print, G-string. You name it. They can even be cheap, as long as they make you feel naughty under even the most conservative attire. They're an instant confidence booster, not to mention your very own dirty little secret.
7. An A-line skirt. Universally figure-flattering. If you are voluptuous, keep the length longer. If you have great legs, look for a mini. The colour and fabric don't matter either -- as long as you love it.
8. A little black dress. The style -- strapless, cap-sleeved, long-sleeve -- is completely up to you. But simple and elegant is key; no froufrou touches or flashy details. You can always dress it up with accessories.
9. A great everyday bag. One that is made well, in a good material with nice hardware. It should be big enough to carry all your essentials yet shouldn't be so big that people mistake it for luggage. Again, price is not important here: you don't have to break the bank on the latest Marc Jacobs. Just look for a style that suits you -- be it a satchel, sling or backpack.
10. A great evening bag. A simple black satin clutch or a gold or silver beaded one goes with everything -- and adds instant glamour to even the most mundane black suit or dress.

Looking for the best cruise for your needs and budget? Don't choose a cruise without reading these tips first.
By Claire Newell (canadianliving.com)
Oh, for the Ocean Blue
Gilligan, eat your heart out! Today's cruise passengers are treated incredibly well. You can choose to cruise virtually anywhere in the world, from oceans to rivers, and on ships that range from freighters to floating luxury resorts complete with wave pools, ice rinks, climbing walls, and so much more. And cruising is a wonderful way to sample what the world has to offer. You can travel from place to place, seeing the highlights everywhere, yet you only have to unpack once and you never have to worry about navigating. When you factor in the hotel and transportation costs of other vacations, cruises can offer good value, too. Most of all, they can be low stress and high fun if you choose the one that suits your vacation style.
Here's what you need to know to get started on the cruise-ship lifestyle.
How do I choose a cruise?
With such a vast selection of cruises out there, how do you know which one will be the best fit for you? Start by asking yourself some basic questions. The answers will help you narrow down your choices.
• Where do I want to go? If you have a firm destination in mind, such as Mexico or the Greek Islands, this is your logical start point.
• Which water do I want to cruise? Cruise ships don't just sail the seas, they also head down rivers and canals, which can be a wonderful way to explore the interior of a country rather than its coastline.
• How much time do I have? Cruises range from three-day weekend getaways to year-round floating homes, so you can find a cruise to suit virtually any schedule. Some of the most popular choices include trips of seven, 10 and 14 days, but the destination may be the determining factor in the length of your trip. For example, if you're heading all the way from North America to Europe to cruise, you may not want to go with just a four-day option unless it's only one part of your trip. Otherwise you'll spend most of the cruise getting over jet lag and then packing up to leave.
What's my vacation priority? Do you want to relax or enjoy the nightlife? Watch wildlife or shop till you drop? Go on eco-adventures or tour historic sites? Some ships are geared to older travellers, with more of an emphasis on history and culture, while others definitely set sail with "party" in mind. You don't want to end up on a ship with a crowd of passengers who are well out of your age or interest range. Some ships also offer specific "theme" cruises, ranging from music to casinos to archeology. If you have a specific focus, these can be an excellent option.
• Who's travelling with me? Your vacation priority may not be the same as that of your travelling companions, especially if you span a significant age range. In this case, you may need to compromise and choose a cruise that will keep everyone fairly happy. This is one of the big advantages of a cruise: there's always plenty to do, both on board and on shore.
• How much do I like other people? This sounds like an odd question, but it's an important one. You can set sail with a handful of other people, with a few hundred, or with a few thousand. If you'd prefer a more intimate experience, you may prefer a smaller ship, which also has the advantage of being able to dock at a greater variety of ports than the larger ships. And if you really want to be adventurous, you can hop on board a freighter. They often take paying passengers and the choices available now are as vast as the oceans and waterways served by these ships. Expect rates to range from US$80 to US$140 per day for trips from 7 days to more than 100 days, and note that there is often an upper age limit, usually 79 or 80, but sometimes 75. There are exceptions, however, especially on shorter, coastal routes, and in those cases when more than 12 passengers are on board, when a medical doctor must be on board as well.
Travel best bet!
I've seen cruises offer groups of friends and families a wonderful vacation experience. In one case, five couples of varying ages travelled together. Some wanted to tour on shore, other wanted to shop, and others just wanted to relax. The cruise gave everyone the opportunity to do their own thing, and they had a great time comparing notes when they all meet for dinner each evening.

Play that Tune
This is a great game for smaller intimate wedding receptions where many of the guests are familiar with one another. Before the wedding day, create short song clips using favourite tunes enjoyed by the bride and groom.
Round up a group of guests and divide them into two teams. One member from each team will have a "play that tune" face off. First one to recognize the song can shout out the answer.
The winner of each round proceeds to the back of the line and continues to play. Others, less fortunate, sweeten their departure from the game, with a sweet gift of candies wrapped in cellophane. Final winner receives a grand prize!

When is Your Birthday?
This is a simple wedding game aimed to help the bride and groom give away their beautiful centrepieces to the guests.
Have the MC announce that the person at each table with the birthday closest to the bride and groom's wedding day will become the proud owner of the centerpiece at his/her table. Jazz up this game by using birthdays to select your guests for a raffle draw!
Other ideas: Hide a trinket under one chair at each table; place a special sticker under one plate at each table; first person to sing at each table; first person that used the bathroom at each table...and the list goes on, but you get the idea.

Bring out the hidden creative talents of your guests with this fun game called "Artists at Work". Gather a group of willing guests who will instantly be transformed into the next Picasso.
Give each a sheet of paper and a large tip marker (allowing seated guests to see the final products). The objective: to draw a picture for the newlywed conveying their well wishes in 30 seconds! The bride and groom will choose the two finalists and the rest of the guests can choose the winner by applause!

Bride or Groom?
This wedding game really helps to liven up the atmosphere at the reception since it requires the participation of the entire wedding party. Guests are sure to love this game.
The women form one team and the men form another. Each receives two signs, one with "BRIDE" and one with "GROOM" written on them. Ensure the signs are large enough for your guests to see clearly.
Have a list of "who" questions such as, "Who do you think will snore the loudest?" or "Who is the neatest?" or "Who will hog the bed?" The entire wedding party raises the applicable sign in answer to the question. Imagine the varying answers you may get!
Choose modest questions that will not embarrass the newly married couple too much in front of close family, co-workers, and young children (especially if they are relatively private people). You know them best!

Begin with the bride sitting in a chair while the groom is blindfolded. Place a piece of banana into his hand and spin him around once. Now, listening only to the directions given by his new bride, he must make his way over to her and feed her the banana!
Once he is successful, switch positions. This time, give the bride a nice juicy piece of wedding cake topped with whipped cream. How well will the groom do in guiding his bride to feed him?
A few notes: since the bride is wearing all that lovely makeup, make sure to give the groom a food item that isn't too messy or it may ruin her look and possibly her wedding dress too. Have the wedding party shadow the bride and groom while they are blindfolded to avoid any accidents.

Guess Who?
This is another wedding game for the reception that aims to place the bride and groom in the spotlight using one very simple prop: a blindfold.
To test how well the groom knows his new bride, have him blindfolded and seated in a chair facing all the reception guests. Now comes the fun part. Round up as many guests as possible, from the young to the old, men and women.
The objective: can the groom figure out which one in the line up is his new bride? In the tame version, the groom can shake each guest's hand to find his new wife. Remember to play some fun and upbeat music during this game!
Other possibilities: Have each guest kiss the groom on the cheek; the groom must feel each person's leg (particularly fun if there are a lot of men in the lineup!).

La La La La Love Song
Liven up the wedding reception and get the guests involved! Inspired by the "Shake Shake Shake" game, guests will have to sing a few bars for the bride and groom to kiss.
Determine what songs can be used. You can choose a theme, such as songs that contain the word "love" or songs from the 1980s or have guests sing for a certain amount of time. The point is to have fun and enjoy the entertainment (and to get the bride and groom to kiss, of course)!

Piggy Back
This wedding game requires a strong groom and a spacious hall. Rather than carrying his bride over the threshold of their new home, this bold groom is going to bravely perform a piggyback ride in front of all the reception guests!
Have the Master of Ceremonies (MC) announce this brave feat of strength as he piggybacks his new bride around the reception hall, symbolizing their new journey together as husband and wife. Make sure to have the guests cheer on the groom. Safety comes first, so please prepare accordingly if you plan on using this game!
Another possibility: Tell the groom he must get from point A to point B in the reception hall with his bride but her feet can't touch the floor! This version tests the crafty wits of the groom and will bring just as many laughs from the guests as the original game.

Celebrate with a Bang!
What's a wedding reception without a little fun aimed at the bride and groom? This wedding game is ideal for any reception.
Celebrate the wedding with a bang! This silly game requires one balloon and the bride and groom. The objective: the new Mr. and Mrs. must work together to pop the balloon using any body part except their hands and feet!
Hmm… this game sounds very interesting. Remember to have the guests cheer on the newlyweds!

Cherry on a String
Now this is one wedding game for the reception that really aims to put the bride and groom in the spotlight. It receives a "spicy" rating because, well, the newlyweds are really going to have to work during this game!
This game requires one bride, one groom, and one cherry on a string held by a willing member of the wedding party. The goal: using only their mouths, the newlyweds must work together to eat the cherry. Begin by positioning the fruit within close reach of the married couple. Raise and lower the treat to add suspense and much laughter! The game ends when the cherry is gone.

Key to His Heart
This wedding game really tests how well the new bride and groom work as a team. The only materials required are a long strand of ribbon (enough to wrap around the groom a few times over) and one clean generic house key.
With the groom standing up, have him hold one end of the ribbon while his groomsmen wrap the rest of it around his body. One groomsman continues to hold the other end of the ribbon while the bride is given the 'key to her groom's heart'.
The object of the game: the groomsman strings the key onto the ribbon and the bride must now move the key around the groom until she reaches the end that is in his hand. The catch: the bride can only use her mouth to move the key!
